IMPs: key tools for safety at work

Individual Protection Devices ( helmets, gloves, glasses, safety shoes, harnesses) are one of the fundamental aspects ofsafety safetyat work. However, the use of the IMPs is too often perceived as a bureaucratic imposition, a formal obligation to comply with to avoid sanctions. In fact, their role is much deeper and their importance for safety at work is indisputable.

What the law says

Article 78 of Legislative Decree 81/2008clearly establishes the obligation to use the IMPs from the part of the workers. However, the law alone is not enough. A worker who wears the helmet only because obliged, and removes it as soon as the manager turns out, is not a protected worker. He’s an exposed worker.

Promoting the proper use of the IMPs is therefore a responsibility that goes far beyond safety at work as a regulatory obligation.

The cultural problem

The real node is not normative. It’s cultural.

In many working environments, the IMPs are lived as a nuisance. They’re hot. They slow down the movements. “Nothing ever happened to me without it. ” These thoughts are understandable. But they’re also dangerous.

An injury doesn’t warn you before you arrive. And often, when he comes, it’s too late to make up.

Change perspective: IMPs as a safety tool at work

Promoting a culture of security means making a fundamental change of perspective: moving from obligation to awareness.

I DPIs are not a constriction imposed from above. I am a tool that every worker has available to protect himself — his own health, his physical integrity, his future.

A helmet does not protect the company. Protects the head of the wearer. A pair of gloves does not protect the HSE manager. Protects the hands of those who work

The role of HSE managers and managers

Security culture is built from above. When a manager wears the DPIs even on a quick visit to the yard, he sends a clear message to the whole team: safety is not optional. It is a shared value.

On the contrary, when reference figures do not give the example, the implicit message is devastating.

Conclusion

The correct use of the IMPs is safety at work in its most practical and daily form, the last line of defence between a worker and an injury.

They do not replace prevention, training or organization of work but complete it. Using them correctly, every day, is an act of respect towards themselves and towards those who love us.
